Nobody knows where Moth was before the lamp. Moth does not know either, and if you ask him he will look past you at the lamp.
He arrived on a Tuesday evening at roughly the moment it was switched on, and he has been in attendance ever since. He has been asked to leave. He has been carried outside in a cup. He has been shown, patiently, the moon, which is bigger and free. Moth has considered all of this and returned to the lamp.
There is no plan. There is no utility. There is a lamp, and there is a moth, and one of them is not going anywhere.
